It’s not uncommon or a craft beer to be unfiltered. Even for an unfiltered IPA, however, this Citra-hopped version of Crooked Tree IPA isn’t that murky. After leaving this treat in the bottle for nearly a year it’s really smoothed out incredibly and is really making me happy on this Friday after a long and brain-draining week of work. I needed a beer. Bad.The brew is bold, burnt orange, but slightly pale in saturation with a very dense white head and nearly solid sheets of lacing. This head remains very healthy, long after bottled, and the carbonation remains just as strong. It has a very finely balanced nose of grain, soft, mellow citrus hops, and a touch of burnt caramel sweetness. The experience is extremely smooth throughout, from nose to finish. The hop bitterness seems homogenous in presence with the grain, tasting, it seems at times, slightly of rye. Only a touch of that grainy, almost wood-like hop and malt character pervades the finish. This beer is really impressive. There’s just enough of every characteristic, from hops to grains to residual sweetness, they’re all perfectly balanced, and the soft, mellow character is much like a perfectly aged beer. Well, it helps that this was actually aged a little. This is much more impressive than I had expected. - noss
